Summer Seasonal Businesses Take Off
Business Opportunity 411, June 9, 2005
As the thermometer pushes toward 90 degrees across the US, the business of summer provides an opportunity for seasonal businesses to prosper.
As I kid, summer wasn't just days off but also when I earedn money mowing lawns in Central Pennsylvania. It was perfect I could mow lawns from 9 - 1 pm and then spend the rest of the day at the pool. But you don't have to be a kid to take advantage of seasonal businesses and profit from them.
Young and old entrepreneurs can find seasonal businesses that can give them the opportunity take work part of the year and earn a good income.
Seasonal businesses range from selling ice cream, mowing lawns, being a nature guide, painting houses to washing cars. The key is to find a seasonal need and determine if there is demand and then fill that demand.
Before you invest in your business, you'll need to do your homework to evaluate the cost to start and run your business, how you will advertise and what to price your product. Do your research and you should be ready to get started.
One important tip to remember is to choose something you don't mind doing yourself. Even if you plan to hire employees, you may have to fill in and complete the work so choose your business wisely.
Here are some summer business ideas:
Selling Ice Cream:
Types of locations: Storefront, cart, truck, bicycle with pull cart
Before Starting: Check permitting and learn where people are on hot days
Concern: Must keep product cold at all times
Lawn & Garden Services:
Classic teen and college business
Advice: Stay local and try to get as many customers in one area as possible. It saves you time and earns you more money.
Concerns: You need a lawn mower and lawn tools
Nature Guide / Adventurer:
As the summer travel season heats up, people love to visit natural parks and see nature. If you have knowledge and expertise you may be able to give tours which can enhance a visitor's experience.
Before Starting: Check to see if there are any permitting regulations
Advice: Sell bed & breakfast owners, by giving them a nature tour, and offer them a referral fee if they book someone on a tour with you.
Painting Houses:
You must get the business in advance. This business normally involves a crew of painters, so you need to pull together a crew. You'll need supplies and tools.
Before Starting: Check for permitting regulations
Car Wash / Detailing Service:
Another classic teen and college business is washing and detailing cars. The cost to get into this business is small and this business can be mobile.
Advice: Know in advance whether the customer will provide a hose and water or if you must supply it.
